Niko Bellic

Life is complicated. I killed people. Smuggled people. Sold people. Perhaps here... things will be different.

Niko Bellic is the main protagonist of the video game "Grand Theft Auto IV," released in 2008. He is an Eastern European war veteran who comes to Liberty City (a fictionalized version of New York City) in search of the American Dream. Throughout the game, players follow Niko as he becomes involved in various criminal activities while also dealing with his past and relationships with other characters. Niko is known for his serious demeanor, strong moral code amidst a criminal environment, and his memorable quote, "War is where the young and stupid are tricked by the old and bitter into killing each other."

Biography

Niko Bellic was born in Yugoslavia on June 25, 1978, part of what is now Serbia. He had a very difficult childhood; that is, his father was a violent alcoholic. His mother, Milica Bellic, was unhappy that her son grew up in such a harsh environment, but was unable to protect Niko. By the time he reached his teens, he was forced to fight for the Serbs, or at least one of paramilitary forces and Serbian militia units. His duty as a helicopter pilot and drove tanks several times. It is very implied that Niko served and fought in the Yugoslav Wars, although he never directly mentions it. His brother died in the Bosnian war.

As a soldier, he had to witness many atrocities, either by the enemies or by his own party. However, his group was eliminated and only Niko, Darko Brevic and Florian Cravic survived. After that incident, the three separated and Niko vowed to find the traitor. When his cousin Roman Bellic had already moved to Liberty City and started a taxi company, Niko, unable to find work in his devastated country, worked as a human smuggler for Ray Bulgarin, but after a failed smuggling operation in the Adriatic Sea, he became Bulgarin enemy.
Darko implies that Niko and his military may have committed war crimes during the Yugoslav war, although this has not been confirmed. During that time, Niko could not find Florian or Darko (one of whom also moved to Liberty City)

Event of GTA IV

Following his cousin's wishes and looking for a traitor, Niko boarded the Platypus and illegally moved to Liberty City. On the boat, he met and befriended Hossan and several passengers, all of whom were immigrants. Arriving there, Niko discovered that not only had Roman lied about the "mansion", but he was also heavily in debt. He saved Roman several times from Albanian sharks and then killed them. One day at Roman's depot, Niko meets Vlad Glebov, a member of the Russian mafia, to whom Roman owes money. Impressed that Niko is not afraid, Vlad recruits Niko to work for him in exchange for Roman not paying his debts.
Niko tries to help Roman and decides to work for Vlad despite his arrogant and insulting behavior. However, Vlad is secretly having an affair with Roman's girlfriend, Mallorie Bardas, and when Niko finds out, he goes to a social bar and after a chase, kills Vlad mercilessly. However, this draws the attention of Russian mobster Mikhail Faustin, for whom Vlad worked, and Andrei, one of Faustin's henchmen, successfully comes to Niko and Roman. During Faustin's interrogation, Niko implies that he killed Vlad because he was a "an asshole", an opinion with which Mikhail agrees before shooting Andrei and recruiting Niko. Niko then sees how Mihail hurts Romi while screaming for help.
Niko and Roman are released, and Faustin's right hand man, Dimitri Rascalov, arranges for Roman to have Niko take Faustin's job. Meanwhile, Niko starts dating Michelle, one of the Mallorie friends, and also befriends the friends of Roman Jacob "Little Jacob" Hughes, one of the leaders of a Jamaican drug gang, and Brucie Kibbutz, an entrepreneur who boasts an arrogant lifestyle. lifestyle However, Faustin lose control and threatens to start a gang war with another Russian mobster, Kenny Petrovic. Having had enough, Dimitri asks Niko to kill Faustin. After a short chase, Niko kills Faustin, but Faustin warns him of Dimitri's treacherous and greedy nature.

After killing Faustin, Dimitri tells Niko to meet him outside an abandoned warehouse in East Hook to collect compensation for Faustin's murder. Niko agrees, but Little Jacob is suspicious of Rascalov's intentions, and they go together, although Jacob hides behind a wall to observe the scene. Niko is here, but Rascalov does not pay.
instead, he brings back Niko's old nemesis, Ray Bulgarin. Niko tries to explain himself, but Bulgarin and Rascalov try to kill him anyway. Thanks to Little Jacob, Niko survives and a shootout ensues in a warehouse full of Rascalov and Bulgarin's henchmen. After defeating the enemy, they escape from the LCPD and Niko thanks Jacob for his help.

When he and Roman are forced to flee to Alderney due to the mafia destroying Roman's flats and taxi business, Niko is introduced to an old friend of the Mallorie and an "inspector" who wants to "clean up the streets". They complete a series of missions that include taking down drug dealers and pimps. When Niko has had enough of Manny, Mallorie tells him that he can find a job with drug lord Elizabeta Torres. Nico's first job is to protect one of Torres' partners, Patrick McReary, during a drug deal. Niko successfully protects Packie (who was ambushed) during the meeting and they also become friends.
One day, Mallorie calls Niko and tells him that Roman is missing, so they start to worry and finally Dimitri sends Niko a picture of Roman tied up. Enraged, Niko allows Dimitri to "cut his face"; discovering where Roman was kidnapped, Niko goes there and kills all of Dimitri's thugs (including Roman's kidnapper).

Nike then begins working for the McReary Crime Family. He helps corrupt deputy police chief Francis McReary, who calls himself the "watchman" of the city, get rid of several pimps, including Clarence Little, as well as blackmailers who threaten Francis to expose their corruption. Niko kills extortionist and lawyer Tom Goldberg, who plans to sue Francis. With Niko's help, the family also robs a bank in Liberty City, killing many police officers and NOOSE (National Office of Security Enforcement) agents in the process. Also befriends and falls in love with Packie's sister Kate.
He also meets Trey Stuart, better known as "Playboy X", a drug dealer and pimp who is not afraid of Francis. They work together, specifically cleaning up several rival gang properties, but then Playboy X asks Niko to get rid of his old "friend" and current enemy, Dwayne Forge, while Dwayne asks Niko to do the same to Playboy X. Who Niko kills depends on the choice of the player.

When Niko helps Little Jacob recover Elizabeta's cocaine shipment, he learns that Michelle, real name Karen Daniels, is actually an undercover IAA agent. Niko is then blackmailed into working at United Liberty Paper - the Liberty City branch of the IAA - for a mysterious contact and to perform various tasks.
Niko also meets Ray Boccino, a lieutenant in the Pegorino crime family, one of the city's smaller gangs. Ray assigns Niko to track down a deal between his family and the Jewish mob that Luis Lopez is bringing down. Niko survives, but Johnny Klebitz steals the diamonds. In retaliation, Ray tells Niko to go after Johnny's friend Jim. Niko then kills the rest of the Jewish smugglers, but manages to spare their leader. Finally, Ray informs Niko that he may have found one of the possible traitors: Florian Cravic. Niko immediately goes to Cravic's apartment to find a frightened and harmless man who has changed his name to Bernie Crane. After a brief confrontation, Niko realizes that Bernie was not a traitor.
However, he learns that Bernie is constantly being harassed by blackmailers who want to expose his relationship with the ultra-homophobic (and hypocritical) deputy mayor Bryce Dawkins. Niko defends Bernie from several attackers, each again hired by Dimitri.

Meanwhile, Don Jimmy Pegorino of the eponymous crime family becomes paranoid and orders Nico to kill Anthony Corrado and Ray Boccino. The contact leads Nico to Jon Gravelli, a former crime lord in his hospital bed who wants to get rid of the Russians led by Dimitri and Bulgarini. In return, they promise to find the traitor Darko Brevic and leave Nikon alone. Niko agrees and destroys several Russian properties. At the end of the game, a UL Paper contact directs Niko to Francis International Airport, where IAA agents drop off Darko, who appears to be a very dirty, poor, debilitated drug addict. Darko reveals to Niko that he sold their team for a thousand dollars to fuel his addictions. Niko then has the option to kill him or spare him. This has no effect on the story as Darko is never seen again regardless of the choice.

Post GTA IV

If Niko decides to make a deal with Dimitri, Niko will probably give up his life of crime and stay close to his friends because they are there for him. In addition, Niko tells Mallorie that her child does not have to worry about being an orphan and suggests that Niko will help take care of her child and take on the role of a father.
When Niko decides to take revenge on Niko's love interest, Dimitri, Kate is killed, although she is still able to meet Alexandra Chilton, Carmen Ortiz or Kiki Jenkins, and keep in touch with her cousins and friends.he will probably give up his life of crime and try to live a normal life with Roman, as suggested by the comments made about her in Grand Theft Auto V.

Appearance

Niko is a fairly tall, Caucasian man in his thirties. He has dark brown hair, brown eyes and a small beard. He usually seems hard, emotionless. His casual attire is a brown jacket, dark gray pants and brown shoes. However, the player has access to several costumes as they progress, such as: a medical suit (which Niko wears to kill Anthony Corrado), an expensive suit (which Niko wears to formal events, such as a Roman wedding), a costume. statue of happiness or even of the costume of Claude (the hero of Grand Theft Auto III). He can also wear a balaclava (from the bank robbery).

Personality

From the start, it's clear that Niko is suffering from a quarter-life crisis. Growing up in difficult circumstances and witnessing the horrors of war, Niko generally feels disillusioned, fatalistic, confused about his direction in life, pessimistic, confused, unappreciated, cynical and unfulfilled.
Niko is very protective of his family and loved ones, especially his cousin Roman, who Niko has to constantly take care of because of the way he plays. Roman has a carefree nature, which often gets the couple into trouble. He is withdrawn around strangers but has a good upbringing and shows a softer side with love interests such as Kate McReary and Michelle. But the horrors of war that Niko has seen and done have left him with great guilt and ambivalence about the value of human life - he warns his persecutors and expresses remorse for past violence, but also feels that killing is all he does. succeeds easily by accepting jobs that inevitably involve murder.
Niko is prone to violence when enraged and explosive when betrayed, manipulated or his loyalty is questioned, but he is also quick to help the defenseless and unfortunate, even those he only meets in passing. apparently he has a sense of idealism that was wounded by wartime experiences. Unfortunately, this split attitude leads to hypocrisy - for example, Niko seems genuinely sympathetic to McReary's grief over the death of one of their brothers (either Derrick McReary or Francis McReary), despite secretly committing the murder himself. This makes it very possible that Niko is a pessimist.
Niko's bitterness over the murder of his friends during the war has consumed him and he cannot let it go, accepting several extremely dangerous missions to enable his quest for revenge. Several of her friends, especially Roman, encourage her to find a new reason to live, and Niko has many moral choices to emphasize his quality.Niko's serious demeanor usually makes him more mature and cautious than his acquaintances, although this is no surprise with acquaintances like Brucie Kibbutz, Bernie Crane and Roman. He is clearly averse to illegal drugs like Carl Johnson and Victor Vance. He often refuses Little Jacob's offers of marijuana and warns Packie about his cocaine use. He also finds the smuggling of cocaine, and especially heroin, repulsive, although the reason for this may be both severe prison sentences and moral stupidity. He is skeptical of mainstream American culture, which he considers "low" and "hypocritical", and struggles with Romani's fascination with the country. However, he reasons that being in America is much better than being back in Serbia because of the country's instability and poverty.

Initial Inspiration a comparison between Sasha and Niko.

Niko appears to be visually inspired by Sasha from the 2001 movie Behind Enemy Lines, which takes place in Bosnia and Herzegovina during the war. Sasha's clothes are even available to buy in the Russian Shop.

Sasha's actor Vladimir Mashkov later confirmed in an interview that he was asked to play "a man with a dark past, with a slightly rumpled appearance" in an unnamed video game, whose producers liked his performance as Sasha. Given few details about what he was being asked to do or what for, Mashkov thought it was a questionable proposal and not very interesting, and he turned it down. Only later did he learn that the game was GTA IV.
