Sergeant John Carver (EarthGov ID 0023-01) is a soldier of earth defense force Special OPS branch A survivor of the Necromorph outbreak at uxor and Keyhole station, Carver helps Isaac Clarke to complete the mission of his dead wife Damara. To eliminate the basis of the index on Tau Volantis.
Biography
John Carver was born on April 21, 2477 on Mars. At one point in his life, he joined the Special Operations Branch of the Army and rose to the rank of Sergeant. He was drafted twice and received nine accolades before being relegated to grunt status.
At some point in his career, John met a woman named Damara and together they had a child whom they named Dylan. In the logs that Carver recalled during his hallucinations on Tau Volantis and also in an audio log on the USM Eudora, it was revealed that Carver had a difficult time adjusting to family life and spending time with his wife and son, which caused him to become irritable and even insubordinate, as he was once placed on administrative leave to be with his family after assaulting his superior officer (possibly the same incident that caused his demotion).
His anger issues also led to at least one incident of domestic violence involving Dylan. After Dylan told his mother that he wanted to grow up to be a soldier like his father, Damara bought him a toy soldier on John's behalf for his birthday, prompting John to react with fear.Haunted by his actions as a soldier and thinking that he was not a worthy father for not being there for his son and wife, John made a recording of his supposedly final words and was about to commit suicide when Damara entered the room that he was in.
As Damara was horrified by what she was witnessing, John quickly lied and stated that he was just thinking.Regardless, he began spending more and more time away from home to avoid his belief that he was a failure as a father and husband, further straining his relationship with his wife.At some point, the family moved to an EarthGov research facility on Uxor that housed a Red Marker. Carver was tasked with guarding the facility
Uxor incident
At an unspecified point in time, John Carver got into an argument with the captain of the Earth Defense Force unit stationed on Uxor and smashed the captain's vidscreen in a fit of anger. He believed that the captain was spreading the troops on the planet too thin. As possible punishment for his actions, Carver was assigned to patrol the perimeter nearest to the Marker Shroud 4 site.
Damara contacted him while he was on patrol, frustrated with his behavior. On top of missing Dylan's bedtime, his actions cost the family promised vacation time.Equally as frustrated with his own behavior as his wife was, Carver suggested that they may be better off without him after Damara made an offhand comment about raising Dylan "on her own". However, their argument was cut short when Carver discovered a sabotaged scanner and a long-sight laser marker triangulated on the position of the Marker's containment dome. Realizing things are taking too long, Carver warns Damara and Dylan to get to safety as the missile destroys the signal barrier.
Captured
Carver narrowly escapes being shot before an EMP destroys the surrounding tech signal and a large ship crashes into the building. Fearing the worst, Carver rushed to visit his wife and son.
However, Necromorphs soon attacked. In the colony, he was captured by the unitologist, a hostile group extremist Led by Jacob Danik.Their attempts to get answers from him reveal information about his family and his wife's activities at the Markers, leaving Carver to fend for himself while he goes to eliminate the rest of the family. Enraged, Carver stormed off and attacked the rest of the circle.
After his successful escape, he reached his home. To his horror, he found that Dylan and Damara were dead, their bodies turned into necromorphs. He had to hit them with a gun every time and apologize to them. With his wife and children dead, Carver suffers from mental breakdown and is on the verge of suicide when Eli Langford, Damara's old friend from Carver's time, calls to Haven Prime, to the house and try to reach him.Realizing his wife's research and its importance to Ellie, Carver hears Ellie's voice and grabs the data stick his wife hid in a blue doll. Realizing that the transmissions are being monitored, he uses Ellie as bait to lure the circle into an opening to intercept them. Robert Norton and the USM Eudora arrived to take them out into the world.
The data tree contains important information and a message from his wife explaining that she has found the source of the signal. Carver was proud of his wife's work and decided to help Robert and Ellie complete Damara's project. Their first destination is Ptolemy Station, but as they head towards the station, the crew discovers that the Circle is there and that the station has been taken over by Necromorphs. However, they found the marker signal to appear.
After destroying the station, go to the Keyhole Station to get the beacon to reach the origin of the signal. During the journey, Ellie and Carver bond. Carver calmly expressed his guilt to Ellie, assuring her that he could make amends if he could finish his wife's job.At Keyhole Station, Carver, Norton and Ellie are separated by the Necromorphs and Circle's efforts to attack the station's exterior. When Carver and Norton cannot reach her, Ellie decides to jump to Tau Volantis without them, knowing that they will follow her. They disable the shockring and the station to prevent Ellie from being chased by Danik and his men. After that, Norton decided it was time to find Isaac Clarke.
After some time, Carver and Norton find Clark at the New Horizons lunar colony at the Earthrise Apartments. However, the Unitologists have arrived and begin their first mission to dive into the city. Carver broke into Clark's house by unknown means, and Norton was able to distract isaac long enough for Carver to strike him. As Norton explains the situation to Clark, Carver pins him down as the circle attacks the home. Isaac agreed to help the two when the Unitologist destroyed the colony to find Clark.
On the way to the extraction, Norton and Carver explain to Clarke that they are the last remnants of EarthGov's military forces. The Circle has disavowed EarthGov's authority in recent weeks. Arriving at the extraction site, the trio were attacked by Unitologist hunters. After a brief firefight, a suicide bomber detonates their car, knocking Isaac and Carver into a nearby sewer ditch, separating them from Norton.
When their plans fail, the two are forced to fight their way to the extraction site where an EarthGov unit awaits them while the Unitologists try to slow them down. Arriving at the meeting point, it turns out that the Unitologist have found the extraction team and are working on the last of them. They are outnumbered, and the unitologist are quickly overwhelmed, and Danik forces Isaac to stand aside while he blasts the cover of the city, protecting it from the signal.Danik prepared to kill Isaac, but he managed to avoid the shot and fell onto a pile of corpses, blacking out for a moment.
Later, Isaac and Carver wake up to find all hell has broken loose and the dead have risen as necromorphs and begin to destroy the colony. Due to the outbreak, they manage to evade the Unitologists long enough to reach their final destination, Washington Station, encountering many Necromorphs in the process. Arriving at the train station and taking the train out of town, the Unitologists meet them and the USM Eudora arrives to save Clark and Carver from death.
Journey to Tau Volantis
While walking through ShockSpace, Clark wakes up to find Carver sitting next to him. When Carver's family is killed by Danik , he tries to talk to Carver, asking about his son and expressing his sympaties. Carver explained to Clark that they were not friends and that they should work harder to work together on their cause. Norton ordered them to get to the bridge and brief the crew on their mission.
to the remains of the vehicle. Carver, Norton and Clarke battled for control of the box as they made their way back to the mine. They soon regain control of the sealed room and head to CMS Roanoke, where they see blood and a coffin, and Carver realizes have been an execution.
Realizing that the ship was not completely destroyed, they encountered some Necromorphs on their way to Eli beacon and managed to restart the ship's mission. As they go, they find Eli, Santos, and Austin Buckle. Carver wondered about Clarke's feelings for Norton and Ellie when the engineer reprimanded her for not knowing about their relationship.
The two arrive at Marjorie Graves quarter, where Clarke discovers that Graves is interested in building a machine to "control" the Agents. Ellie said they had discovered their "marker world" and were putting their efforts together to figure out how to go the planet. While recovering the fragments, Carver heard his son's voice calling for help and decided to investigate Brusilov's CMS.Inside, Carver continued to listen to his son. The two restore the ship's life systems and find a small red dot surrounded by corpses. Despite Clarke's attempts to stop him, Carver approaches a toy soldier sitting on Earth before being ambushed by Necromorphs that destroy life systems. As they run away, Clarke asks what the marker tell to Carver. Carver avoided the question.
Enter the planet
After Crozier's CMS was fixed, Carver and others used the orbiter to approach the planet. But the ferry was badly damaged and collapsed after re-entering. Separated from the others, Clark and Carver battled the extreme cold of the storm system. They sought refuge in a shelter, where they found Buckle shortly before he died of hypothermia.
The others scrambled to find suits to keep them warm, but Buckle chose to stay behind, fearing he might be hiding under the lower level, so he looked for another suit. Carver and Clarke go head-to-head on a quest to find the others, with Carver complaining about Clarke's misunderstanding of Ellie and his lack of focus on the mission itself. They eventually reunite with the others, who have found a way to find the machine that Graves mentioned.
The sudden appearance of the circle caused Clark and Carver to separate from the group and the Unitologists battled each other as they began to destroy the excavation site. When they get lost, they regroup with Santos and the others at the warehouse in time to figure out how to find a trace of the machine using the body of a giant necromorph called "Nexus". In order to return the power to the machine, Carver and Clark must collect the necessary parts to build the cell.
Carver and Clarke then walked down the path that would lead them to the warehouse. In the distance, Carver saw his wife covered in blood, crying and shaking from the cold. Not knowing what the soldier saw and wanting to make sure he was okay, Clark decided to follow him when he said he saw a woman. While entering the archeological warehouse, the elevator breaks down, and Carver begins seeing hallucinations of his family and faces appearing from the walls of the elevator.
In the warehouse, tin soldiers line the walls with containers of different sizes. The voices of his wife and son managed to calm Carver in the warehouse they walked into. Photos of children's toys, gifts, and party gift are plastered with messages ("daddy hates me," "he's dead inside," "like father like son") and feeds into Carver's hysteria. All the while, Clark remained silent as they fought underground.
When they reached the end of the warehouse, Carver got out and Clarke revealed that they had been in the elevator for over five minutes. Returning to the screen, Carver was shaken by his experience. The parts they found allowed them to make sensors and find more than a thousand points below the planet's surface. Santos and Eli left the house while Clark and Carver stayed with Norton, who took them into custody. Norton was released by Jacob Danick and his men before Clarke and Carver joined them. Carver was furious when he heard that Norton had betrayed him and the others instead of Clark.
Clarke managed to stop Norton from being killed, and the trio gained control over the Unitologists. Their fight was short lived, however, when the Nexus appeared and attacked them. Carver and Clark managed to save Norton before fighting the giant beast. After killing Clark and Carver and escaping the belly of the beast, they are attacked by an angry Norton, who blames Clark for their problems. Clark then shot him in the head, killing him.
Carver rightfully kills Norton, reminding Clark that he has no choice in the matter. Regrouping with Ellie and Santos, the news about Norton's death did not go over well. Santos believed that the mission was lost, but Carver reminded her that she would be left behind if she became a liability. Ellie and Santos stayed behind while Clarke and Carver climbed the cliffs, on top of which they found a cargo cage for them to use and later located the winch to reactivate the cage's generator.
Ellie exited the cage seconds before the beast that had hunted Isaac and Carver appeared and grabbed onto the cage, endangering Santos. Isaac tried to save her, but Carver, realizing that they would be dragged down along with the face of the cliff, cut the wire rope of the cage at its base, killing Santos.
Clarke and Carver were then separated from Ellie when the Necromorph attacked the cliff and pulled them down with the collapsing structure.
Confroting Hallucination
After meeting Ellie at the Rosetta lab, Carver and Clark search for the Rosetta pieces. Carver also began to see the tin soldiers confused and saw his wife lying on Clark's face. They go to a warehouse where Carver is taken to a place similar to Clark's situation when he met Nicole in scene 12. Hint. The ground was littered with birthday presents, rough rocks and pictures of Damara and Dylan.
Damara's voice spoke to Carver, taunting him for having "nothing left" and instructing him to join his family in death, supposedly with his death. the family becomes "whole". Every time Carver pulls out of the world, Clark tells him that he shouldn't face Marker. As he tries to get in touch with her, Carver is often transported into his inner world and encounters some dark things. As soon as he reached the target, he smashed it with his weapon and severed the connection.
When he regained consciousness, he and Clarke were standing in front of a broken sign. Afterwards, Carver reminds Clark of their previous conversation and tells Clark that he will "pay" for what he did. When all of Rosetta's fragments were recovered, it was discovered that these fragments had a different origin. Activating the codex, Clark discovers that the alien machine they are looking for has prevented the true source of the "symbol", the light above the world, from completing the fusion.
Danik arrives at their location while Clarke is at work and captures the Codex Engineer while he is still alive. Clark activates the anti-parasite system and fills the room with poison. After Carver and Clarke left the room, it was necessary to close the door manually, and Ellie said to continue without him, thinking that he had disappeared in the cleaning process They closed the door and decided to finish the job.
Danik chases them to a alien city. Seeing the grand landscape below, Carver asks Clark to complete the mission if he fails, hoping that his efforts will pay off this time. Clark assures him that they will be fine and tells Carver that he is a good guy.
Following Earl Serrano's reports, Carver and Clark quickly realize that the city is the silent machine the scientist spoke of. Using a walker, they travel through Machine City to reach the Codex control center. After they configure the machine, Danik tries to use Ellie, who survived the decontamination protocol, to stop them from destroying the moon. Believing that Clark will get a second chance with Ellie, Carver reminds him to "don't let it get you down" and throws the codex at Danik.danik turned off the engine and restarted the fusion assembly, and was killed by falling debris shortly thereafter.
As Eli prepares to leave, Carver tells him to return to Earth and warns "them" of her saw.Carver and Clark leave and go back to the machine. They met "Moon", a Necromorph of incredible size. They fought with thousands of created necromorphs. After being badly damaged by the moon, Clarke and Carver use the Kinesis plate to extract the machine from the wounded creature. Arriving on the island, Carver helps the injured Clark to the island and the machine. When activated, a pulse was sent into them and the surrounding area, and Carver was blown off by the collapsing island as the convergence event ended and the "moon" broke into the planet.
Awakening DLC
It appeared that Carver as well as Isaac survived after reactivating the Machine, as their goal became escaping from Tau Volantis to get back to Earth on the CMS Terra Nova while fighting the New Unitologist Cult. During this fight, the Brethren Moons attempted to turn Isaac and Carver against each other by making Isaac believe the pair would lead the Brethren Moons to Earth if they returned home (while in actuality, the Moons were already en route and simply wished to prevent them from warning Earth in time).
The two defeated the newly formed Unitologist Cult and their so-called prophet and piloted the Terra Nova back to Earth, only to discover that the Brethren Moons had already arrived. One of the Moons arose, causing both Isaac and Carver to suffer further damage from dementia as the Moon closed in on the Terra Nova. Their statuses are currently unknown.
Personality
Carver was an EarthGov soldier dedicated to his duty, willing to prioritize missions over the livelihood of himself and those who might accompany him. A solitary man, he played his emotions close to his chest, even in the company of his family. Several logs throughout Dead Space 3 suggested that Carver may be experiencing symptoms of post-traumatic stress and suicidal tendencies because of the things that he did as a soldier. An incident relating to the alleged abuse of his son suggested the starting point of his emotional distance from his family.
After Carver was forced to kill his family following their transformation into Necromorphs on Uxor, the unresolved issues with them lowered Carver's already low opinion of himself. He thought that he was directly responsible for his wife's secrecy regarding the hidden information she unearthed about the Sovereign Colonies' research on the Markers, and his disdain for his position as a soldier revealed that he did not want his son following in his footsteps. Carver was always quick to anger, which interfered with his military career and his personal life, as he was quick to show contempt, sarcasm, and hatred towards others.
Carver blamed himself for his family's death, believing that finishing Damara's work and stopping the marker was the reason he survived. While he was with Isaac and was about to complete the mission, he became clearer after he touched Damara's hallucination in his mind. He sympathized with Isaac over Ellie's death, allowing him to complete the mission if he survived. Isaac called him a good man, and his heart was light.
